Chitin and chitosan are valuable chemicals found in the shells of crustaceans and have been used as a component of fertilizer for many years. Scientists have discovered a way to make solar panels out of shrimp shells and the process is cheaper, and more environmentally friendly than current materials used to make solar panels. The shrimp panel’s efficiency is still very low, but so was conventional solar panel efficiency until recently. Scientists believe their new panels could one day be used to power everything from wearable devices to computers.
