Today’s Solutions: December 28, 2024

Imagine linking up solar panels, wind turbines and energy storage units of a local area so that they communicate and work together as a standalone microgrid. They can also communicate with the main centralized grid so as to harmonize with it. Imagine now a multitude of these microgrids, and you get the picture of the most resilient power grid ever created. That grid would also optimize the efficiency of energy generation, effectively eliminating the need for excess power created on the main grid out of ignorance of how much renewable energy is available on its edges. That picture is precisely what the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) announced yesterday it is working towards, starting with bringing together software and other components in order to test them and ensure compatible standards for the building blocks of the Internet of Things.
