Reducing food waste has been a top priority of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization since its Director-General José Graziano da Silva arrived at the helm in 2011. While the European Union has suggested its member states reduce their food waste by at least 30 percent by 2025, France’s lower house of parliament is to vote tomorrow on a piece of legislation that will make it a crime for supermarkets of over 400 square meters to throw out unspoiled food. Distributors will have until July 2016 to sign contracts to donate unsold but edible food to charities or for use as animal feed or farming compost.
