Better batteries are seemingly the only missing link between today’s fossil-fuel intensive transportation and the expected advent of the electric car. Batteries need to be cheaper, quickly rechargeable, provide better range, while demonstrating a sustainable lifecycle. A supercapacitor developed with graphene by a South-Korean scientist may point the way: it is able to store as much energy per kilogram as a lithium-ion battery and could be recharged in under four minutes. A lot more work remains to be done, but it is likely that the “miracle material” will prove to be just that.
