America’s offshore wind industry has received a major boost with a Massachusetts law that requires utilities to procure a combined 1,600 megawatts of electricity from offshore wind farms in a little over 10 years. The legislation will make Massachusetts the largest producer of offshore wind in the U.S, but it will not make the Codfish State the first to construct offshore wind farms. That honor goes to Rhode Island where a relatively small offshore wind farm is in its final stages of construction. New York is expected to join the two states soon as well after approving the state’s Clean Energy Standard which requires New York to produce 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
