The transition to renewable energy is good for the economy. In a study that examined cities spread over 89 nations, researchers found that making the shift to low-carbon technologies offers many cities with “significant economic opportunities”. In fact, the report found more than 1,000 economic opportunities linked to climate change in these cities. What this all means is that there are ways for governments to create the conditions where private sector investors will want to finance a shift to low-carbon technologies without the need for governments to wait on public sector financing. Later this month, city planners and urban policy makers will meet for the third U.N Habitat summit, which is only held every 20 years, in order to organize policies that will cut carbon emissions and reduce energy usage in cities.
