Renewable energy is decentralized energy: solar panels on the roofs of homes and windmills in the countryside—no big power plants. There’s one exception: concentrated solar power plants. These plants use mirrors that capture the sun’s rays and concentrate it onto a tower equipped with a molten salt energy storage system. The molten salt, heated to more than 1,000 degrees, then boils water and creates a steam turbine that can drive generators 24/7. A California company is now planning to build the largest ever solar power plant in Nevada. The plant should power 1 million homes.
