Most data centers aren’t very environmentally friendly. According to one estimate, the amount of electricity data centers suck up to cool down their servers is about as much as the airline industry uses. Sweden thinks there’s a better way to keep servers cool while making use of all that excess heat. In a new initiative called Stockholm Data Parks, renewable energy will be used to power data centers, and the excess heat produced will be sold to the district heating company, which will use it to provide heating to homes. Such an initiative would actually be carbon-positive, with one 10-megawatt data center being enough to provide heat for 20,000 apartments.
