The digital economy could make for a very unstable economic future as the Internet is transforming and reducing whole classes of jobs. That’s why the idea of universal basic income is gaining more and more support. With a basic income, every citizen, regardless of employment status, would receive an unconditional government payment to help cover basic needs, replace other social-security payments and support self-employment opportunities. Trials in Finland and the Netherlands are underway and a survey shows that 68 percent of the people of the European Union would vote yes in a basic-income referendum.
